In turn-of-the-century Mexico young Carmen's mother wants to her marry Rodrigo who is rich foolish and old. Carmen's heart lies with Fernando. In an aid to help the young lovers Don Pancho poses as Fernando's godfather in order to get Rodrigo drunk and involve him in a duel so that Rodrigo will run in fear--thus looking foolish and improving Carmen's mother's opinion of Fernando.
