OSCAR nomiee Mickey Rooney (Babes in arms) stars as Billy Coy, a racer with a lot to prove-both to himself and to his late father's memory-at the Indianapolis Speedway. ACADEMY AWARD winner Thomas Mitchell( Stagecoach) is Arthur "Red" Stanley, who was "Cannonball" Coy's mechanic when he died, and gives Billy a job at his garage. Once he became a driver, early success and easy money go to Billy's head, but the fiery death of his best friend on the racetrack puts him into a personal and professional tailspin. Billy's mother, Mary (Sring Byington, an OSCAR nominee for You Can't Take It With You), fears losing another loved one to a crash if history repeats itself at Indianapolis.
