Bottle Rocket follows three friends (Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson and Robert Musgrave) as they attempt to become gangsters. When Anthony (Luke Wilson) is released from his stay at a mental health center, he and close friend Dignan (Owen Wilson) put their plan into action. After roping in reluctant rich kid Hanson (Robert Musgrave)they rob a bookstore and discover that perhaps, it is not the career for them. They flee from the scene and hideout in a shabby motel. Whilst there, they realize that being a gangster is not as relaxing as hiding out in the desert. When Hanson is forced to return home, he steals their car, leaving them stranded. Feeling guilty, Anthony makes the decision to follow Hanson, leaving behind a Paraguayan housekeeper he has fallen in love with. He and Dignan fall out during the journey and go their separate ways. Hanson and Anthony return to life as normal, but Dignan cannot escape his dream of being a gangster. When an opportunity to impress the local godfather (James Caan) arises, Dignan can't say no, and neither can his friends. They meticulously plan the heist, which they execute to the best of their abilities. Unbeknownst to them however, the real job is being pulled on Hanson.
