Soprano Licia Albanese rose to world fame in 1938 when she recorded the role of Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme" opposite tenor Beniamino Gigli. From the start, her singing was characterized by a passion and sincerity of expression which complemented her extraordinary acting ability. Her unique vocal timbre, rich in color and shading, sounded at once powerfully secure and full-throated, and yet delicately vulnerable, a perfect combination for the tragic heroines of Puccini and Verdi. Licia Albanese's long and distinguished association with the Metropolitan Opera (where she debuted in the title role of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" in 1940) has earned her a special place in that company's history.
